2013 has been a monumental year for diverse professionals. Overall veteran unemployment is down to 6.7 percent, just under national unemployment levels; the LGBT community can now enjoy benefits offered to same sex-married couples after the repeal of the Defense Of Marriage Act in June; and, young undocumented immigrants have been granted permission to live and work in the U.S. through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. Just last week, a woman was named CEO of a major automotive company for the first time in history – all made even more significant by the fact that 2013 marked the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
As 2013 draws to a close, unemployment numbers remain hopeful. November’s job report showed a gain of 203,000 jobs putting unemployment levels around 7 percent, the lowest they’ve been since 2008. And, the Department of Labor, under newly appointed Labor Secretary Tom Perez, is ushering in a robust regulatory agenda focused on inclusion.
